The Beachlands couple building a DIY rammed-earth home to a 10 Homestar rating have put their half-finished house on the market due to their marriage break-up.
Rochelle and Joel Payne have spent more than two years working on the “house of their dreams”, making plenty of sacrifices along the way.
The couple completed the one-bedroom apartment attached to the four-bedroom house first, and moved in last year with their two young children to save money on rent.
Stuff visited the family in October, when the hot water cylinder was being fitted finally – they had lived without hot water right through the winter. The children were sleeping in the small living area, and Rochelle Payne said there wasn’t even a kitchen in the unit when they first moved in.
At that time, the Paynes said there had been innumerable delays to the project, which they had hoped to complete in a couple of years. At times, Joel had been hired to work on other rammed-earth projects, and the money had been welcome.
With the marriage breaking down over lockdown, Rochelle says she is finding it hard to let go of the project, and “not see it through”. The half-completed four-bedroom house has been listed with Karen Hay of Harcourts
