Google released the 2nd Developer Preview of Android 14 before today, bringing with it the chosen image access feature. As always, a lot of the unique features in the latest release aren’t visible by default, which is why we painstakingly comb via each release to document what’s new. Our latest discovery is a feature that seems to be specific to Pixel phones: emoji wallpapers(emoji wallpaper on your Pixel).
Back in January, The New York Times posted an article detailing how Google intended to fight the threat posed by ChatGPT. In it, he also spread out some of the organization photograph and video projects in the works, including a “wallpaper maker for Pixel smartphones”. In Android 14 DP2, we saw a new “Emoji Wallpapers” application bundled in the Products partition. This application, as I just mentioned, seems to be Pixel-exclusive, as it has a package name of “com.google.android.apps.emojiwallpaper” and a feature flag of “com.google.android.feature.PIXEL_EXPERIENCE” Must be declared.
By default, the emoji wallpaper picker is not active, but after toggling the debug flag on, I was able to get it to surface in the Wallpapers & Picker application. Once enabled, a fresh “Emoji Lab” option seemed in the Wallpapers list. Tapping it opened a UI that let me make a new wallpaper with various emojis. When creating a wallpaper, you can pick up to 14 emoji to include in the design, select from patterns such as “Mosaic”, “Lotus”, “Stack”, “Sprinkle”, and “Prism” and select between different colors Are. If you don’t know which format you want, you can click on the “Randomize” button to have the application develop a random emoji wallpaper.
After you make an emoji wallpaper, your creation is saved and seems under Wallpapers & Styles > Wallpapers > Emoji Lab. The application can save as numerous emoji wallpapers as you’ve made, and you can switch between them by clicking on them in the list and then clicking “Set Wallpaper”. You can also click on the pencil icon to rework an emoji wallpaper you’ve already made. You may be capable to share emoji wallpapers you’ve made, but I haven’t been capable to come across that feature finally during my initial digging.
As I said earlier, this feature is not allowed by default in Android 14 DP2. Hence, there is no assurance that it will be accessible when the steady build of Android 14 is released for Pixel smartphones.
