Jamal said the larger boat was trying to leave its anchorage in a port on the Buriganga River at the time of the accident. He added that there were at least eight women and three children among the dead, and that the morning bird sank very quickly, in about 15-20 seconds.
Shahidul Islam, a Bangladesh fire service official, told CNN: “Until we recover 32 bodies from the capable boat. The police are working on the rescue mission.”
Navy diver Nazrul Islam picked up two bodies to the surface, but believes he could have more people in the middle of the boat. He said the building is located about 60-70 feet deep on the river bed, which is made up of wet earth and plastic trash.
A four-member committee has been formed to look into the accident, said Commodore Golam Sadeq, who is the Chief of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority.
As word of the accident spread, hundreds gathered on the river bank. The crowd included family members of the missing, who some had secured a boat in an attempt to find their loved ones.
